about

The Story:
La DanZa De Los Diablos aka The Ruja Dance: A Sacred Rite of Freedom and Cultural Heritage
The Ruja Dance, a powerful and deeply symbolic ritual, stands as a testament to the resilience and heritage of Afro-descendant populations in the Costa Chica region of Guerrero and Oaxaca, Mexico. Rooted in history, this dance emerged as a fervent plea to the African god Ruja for liberation from the oppressive yoke of Spanish colonialism.
This dance, also known as the "Devil's Game," transcends mere performance; it is a profound expression of cultural identity and a poignant remembrance of ancestral struggles. Its origins can be traced back to the hearts and minds of enslaved Africans who, in their pursuit of freedom, invoked Ruja's divine intervention.
Over the centuries, the Ruja Dance has become an integral part of the indigenous traditions of the Costa Chica region, particularly in the municipality of Cuajinicuilapa. This area, rich in history and cultural significance, has been rightfully declared a "Site of Memory of the Slavery of Afro-descendant Populations." It serves as a living testament to the enduring spirit of those who fought for their freedom and the preservation of their cultural heritage.
The Ruja Dance takes center stage in the annual celebrations of the Day of the Dead in Mexico, observed on November 1 and 2. During this time, the dance is performed with utmost reverence, as participants pay homage to their ancestors, invoke the spirit of Ruja, and remember the struggles of their forebears.
As the dancers move to the rhythm of ancestral drums and wear vibrant, traditional costumes, the Ruja Dance not only entertains but also educates and inspires. It serves as a living history lesson, reminding us of the power of resilience, the importance of cultural preservation, and the enduring hope for freedom that has transcended generations.
In the Ruja Dance, we find a harmonious blend of spirituality, tradition, and cultural pride—a celebration of the past, a reflection on the present, and a hopeful embrace of the future. This sacred ritual continues to be a source of inspiration, connecting us to our shared human history and the enduring quest for freedom and cultural identity.

🇲🇽🇲🇽🇲🇽 This compilation is a tribute to Iztapalapa:
Iztapalapa is situated at 7,480 feet (2,280 metres) above sea level in the Valley of Mexico. It was formerly a city built on the site of an important pre-Columbian town. Overlooking the area is Mount Estrella, where Aztecs kindled a sacred fire to initiate each cycle of their calendar round of 52 years 🇲🇽🇲🇽🇲🇽
